Happy National Popcorn Day

Who knew, right? I think there is a day for everything now. I for one am happy to celebrate the golden kernel. I am a big fan. My Golden Globes popcorn was delicious, I gobbled up my creations in no time but knowing that today is a day celebrating popcorn I have no choice but to make some more. Perhaps today it will be peanut butter popcorn (put peanut butter on anything and I am going to like it) or classic caramel corn.

Golden Globes Popcorn

I am a sucker for all the awards shows. I love seeing the gowns and the fawning that goes on and how self congratulatory everyone is. I am in for the long haul, starting with the red carpet show until the bitter end. I am sure that Michelle Williams will be a vision as always.

Knowing that I have a long night of television viewing ahead of me, I decided that I needed to prepare with snacks. Popcorn is the obvious choice. I am a kettle corn fan, but I decided to expand my kernel horizons and search for other tasty recipes. I went with spicy maple cashew popcorn, because you can't go wrong with sweet and spicy all in one handful. Considering it was going to be a long night, I also made honey spice popcorn, with orange zest and almonds. Heavenly.

Hot Docs Popcorn

Hot Docs is here! I have already seen a couple of documentaries and have a few more lined up. I am gearing up to be intrigued, provoked, and stuffed with popcorn. As soon as I enter a movie theatre and smell that popcorn smell I start salivating. It is completely Pavlovian.

With ten days of movies, however, I may need an alternative to plain old buttered popcorn. I made myself kettle corn (my favourite) and some chili lime popcorn to smuggle into the shows for variety. Yum!

Cozy Oscar Party

The Academy Awards are this weekend and I am not in the mood to get all glammed up for a fancy Oscar party. Instead, I will invite a couple of girlfriends over to don their sweats and join me on the couch. We will criticize the outfits and speeches to our hearts content, suffer through the boring acceptance speeches and roll our eyes during the painful musical numbers. As I watch the actresses trying to breathe in their impossible dresses, I will feel grateful that I can snack with abandon and not worry about exploding out of a gown.

Naturally, many snacks will be in order for such a long night and what better choice than popcorn. I decided on an assortment of savory and sweet popcorns and chilled Prosecco seems like a festive sparkly accompaniment. We will be well stocked for a night of armchair heckling.

Here's the recipe ...
